How the Markdown Table Generator works

Paste rows of data and get a Markdown table for README files, GitHub issues, wikis and docs. The first row becomes the header. The tool reads comma-separated values (with quoted fields), tab-separated cells copied from Excel or Google Sheets, and existing pipe tables.

Columns are padded so the source is easy to read, and pipes inside cells are escaped (\|) so they don't break the table. Choose an alignment for all columns; number columns can be right-aligned automatically.

The Qty column is right-aligned because it holds numbers.

Select cells in Excel or Google Sheets, copy and paste them here. The cells arrive tab-separated, and each row becomes a table row.

Frequently asked questions

What do the colons in the second row mean?

They set alignment: :--- is left, :---: is centre and ---: is right. Without a colon the renderer uses its default, usually left.

Can a cell contain a line break?

Not in standard Markdown tables — each row must be one line. Use <br> inside the cell if your renderer (GitHub does) allows HTML.

What if rows have different numbers of cells?

Short rows are padded with empty cells, so every row has as many columns as the longest one.
