A newsletter link
https://example.com/sale/ with source newsletter, medium email and campaign spring-sale becomes https://example.com/sale/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring-sale.
Add utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign to a URL to track campaigns in Google Analytics.
Where the traffic comes from: google, facebook, newsletter.
The channel: email, cpc, social, banner.
The promotion or campaign name.
An ID that links to cost data in Google Ads or GA4 imports.
Paid search keywords.
Tells apart links in the same campaign, e.g. two buttons.
Enter the page URL, source, medium and campaign name to build the link.
Runs in your browser — nothing you enter is sent to a server.
UTM parameters are tags added to a link so analytics tools such as Google Analytics can tell which campaign brought a visitor. Enter the page URL and at least the source, medium and campaign name; the tool adds them as utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, plus optional utm_id, utm_term and utm_content.
Parameters already in the URL and any #section are kept; old UTM values are replaced. Values are URL-encoded (a space becomes %20), and the tool warns about spaces and capital letters, because analytics reports treat “Email” and “email” as different values.
https://example.com/sale/ with source newsletter, medium email and campaign spring-sale becomes https://example.com/sale/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring-sale.
For https://example.com/p?id=7#reviews the UTM tags go after id=7 and before #reviews, so the page still opens at the reviews.
Google Analytics can work with just utm_source, but source, medium and campaign together give reports you can compare, so the tool asks for all three. Term, content and ID are optional.
No. Internal UTM links start a new session and overwrite where the visitor really came from. Use them only on links placed elsewhere: emails, ads, social posts, QR codes.
Agree on lowercase values with hyphens (spring-sale, not “Spring Sale”), keep a shared list of sources and mediums, and reuse them. Consistent names keep reports from splitting one campaign into several rows.
Percent-encode text for URLs and query strings, or decode %20-style encoded text back to readable text.
