How the GPA Calculator works

Add a row for each course with its letter grade and credits (or credit hours), then select Calculate GPA. Each grade is converted to points on the common 4.0 scale and weighted by credits, so a four-credit course counts twice as much as a two-credit one.

The scale used: A+ and A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, F = 0. Some schools use different values; check your school's policy.

GPA = Σ(points × credits) ÷ Σcredits

Where:

points: Grade points for the course
credits: Credits for the course

Σ(points × credits) is the total of quality points.

Examples

A (3 credits), B+ (4 credits), C (2 credits)

(12 + 13.2 + 4) ÷ 9 = 3.24.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a cumulative GPA?

Enter every course from all your terms. Because the average is weighted by credits, averaging term GPAs directly gives the wrong answer when terms have different credit totals.

Are pass/fail courses included?

Usually not. Leave them out, or give them 0 credits — courses with 0 credits don't affect the result.
