How the Average Calculator works

Type or paste your numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines — a column copied from a spreadsheet works. The calculator shows the mean (the usual “average”), the median, the mode, and the sum, count, minimum, maximum and range. Don't use thousands separators in the list: “1,000” would be read as 1 and 000.

mean = Σx ÷ n

Where:

x: Each number
n: How many numbers there are

The median is the middle value once sorted (the mean of the two middle values for an even count). The mode is the most frequent value; if every value appears equally often there is no mode.

Examples

4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

Sum 108 ÷ 6 = 18. The median is 15.5, the range is 38 and there is no mode.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the mean or the median?

The median is better when a few values are far from the rest, such as incomes or house prices; one very large value pulls the mean up but barely moves the median.
