How the Fuel Cost Calculator works
Choose the units you use, then enter the distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency and the fuel price. Tick Round trip to double the distance, and add how many people are sharing to split the cost. For UK miles per gallon, prices are per liter, as at UK pumps.
Formula
L/100 km: fuel = distance × L ÷ 100 · mpg: fuel = distance ÷ mpg
Cost = fuel × price. UK gallons are converted to liters (1 UK gallon = 4.54609 L).
Examples
300 miles at 30 mpg, 3.50 per US gallon
10 gallons: 35.00.
100 miles at 50 mpg (UK), 1.50 per liter
9.09 L of fuel: 13.64.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my fuel efficiency?
Your car's trip computer or manual, or work it out: liters used ÷ kilometers × 100 after filling up.
Are US and UK mpg the same?
No. A UK gallon is about 20% larger, so the same car shows a higher mpg in the UK.
Does it include tolls or wear?
No, only fuel. Add tolls and parking separately for a full trip budget.
