How the Electricity Cost Calculator works

Enter the appliance's power in watts, how many hours a day it runs and your electricity price per kWh (on your bill). The calculator converts watts to kilowatts, multiplies by the hours to get the energy in kilowatt-hours, and multiplies that by your price. A month is an average of 365 ÷ 12 days.

Formula

kWh = W ÷ 1000 × hours; cost = kWh × price

Examples

A 1,500 W heater, 3 hours a day, 0.20 per kWh

4.5 kWh a day: 0.90 a day, 27.38 a month and 328.50 a year.

Six 10 W LED bulbs, 5 hours a day, 0.30 per kWh

0.3 kWh a day: 32.85 a year.

Frequently asked questions

Is the label wattage what the appliance really uses?

It's the maximum. Fridges, heaters and air conditioners cycle on and off, so their real use is lower. A plug-in energy meter gives exact numbers.

What does standby cost?

Enter the standby watts and 24 hours: a 2 W standby at 0.20 per kWh costs about 3.50 a year.

What's the difference between kW and kWh?

kW is power — how fast energy is used. kWh is energy — power × time. The Energy Converter converts kWh to other units.
