Numbering a list
a and b on two lines become 1. a and 2. b. Starting at 5 with empty lines skipped, "a, (empty), b" becomes "5. a", an empty line and "6. b".

How the Add Line Numbers works
Paste your lines and choose Add: each line gets a number, from the start number you pick, followed by a dot, bracket, colon, tab or space. Line up the numbers to pad short ones with spaces, and skip empty lines if they shouldn't be counted.
Choose Remove to take numbers off a copied list. A number at the start of a line is removed when a dot, bracket, colon, dash, tab or space follows it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I number code for a document?
Yes. Choose a tab or space after the number and turn on "Line up numbers", so line 9 and line 10 stay aligned.
Will removing numbers delete a year at the start of a line?
It can: a line such as "2026 was fine" looks like a numbered line. Check the result if your lines start with numbers that belong to the text.
