How the Temperature Converter works

Enter a temperature and choose the scales. Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin have different zero points, so the converter uses the exact formulas below rather than a single factor.

Temperatures can be negative, but not below absolute zero (−273.15 °C, −459.67 °F or 0 K). Values below that are rejected because they can't exist.

Formulas

Celsius to Fahrenheit

°F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32

Fahrenheit to Celsius

°C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9

Celsius to Kelvin

K = °C + 273.15

Kelvin uses the same step size as Celsius, shifted so that 0 K is absolute zero. It's written without a degree sign.

Examples

Oven at 180 °C in Fahrenheit

180 × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 = 356 °F

Room at 72 °F in Celsius

(72 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 22.22 °C

Where the scales meet

−40 × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 = −40 °F — the only temperature that reads the same in both.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a quick way to estimate Fahrenheit?

Double the Celsius value and add 30. It's close for everyday temperatures (20 °C → 70 °F, exact 68 °F) but drifts further off at high or low values.

Why is there no “degrees Kelvin”?

Kelvin is an absolute scale, so its unit is simply the kelvin (K). The degree sign is only used with Celsius and Fahrenheit.

How do I convert a temperature difference?

A change of 1 °C is a change of 1.8 °F (no +32). This converter converts temperatures, not differences, so for a rise of 10 °C multiply by 1.8 yourself: 18 °F.
