How the Random String Generator works

Pick a character set, a length and how many strings you need, then select Generate strings. Every character is drawn with your browser's secure random generator using unbiased sampling, so each allowed character is equally likely in every position.

Choose Custom characters to use your own set — every different character you type can appear, including letters from any language and emoji. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Formula

bits = length × log₂(characters)

For a secret token, aim for at least 128 bits: for example 32 hexadecimal characters or 22 characters of URL-safe Base64.

Examples

An API key–style token

32 hex characters: 32 × log₂(16) = 128 bits

Short codes

8 letters and digits: 8 × log₂(62) ≈ 47 bits — plenty for coupon or invite codes.

Frequently asked questions

Can two strings come out the same?

Yes, it's possible, because each string is independent — but with enough length it's vanishingly unlikely. For guaranteed unique IDs, use the UUID Generator.

What is URL-safe Base64?

The 64 characters A–Z, a–z, 0–9, - and _. They need no escaping in URLs or file names, so they're common for tokens.

Should I use this for passwords?

You can, but the Password Generator guarantees every chosen kind of character appears and can avoid look-alikes.
