How the MIME Type Lookup works
A MIME type (also called a media type or content type) tells a browser what kind of file it receives, for example image/webp. Web servers choose it from the file extension and send it in the Content-Type header.
Type an extension (.webp), a file name (report.pdf) or a type (image/png, or font/* for a whole family). The list covers 87 common extensions, from the IANA registry and what servers send in practice.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the wrong MIME type matter?
With the nosniff security header, browsers refuse scripts and styles sent with the wrong type, and a PDF sent as text shows as garbage. Web fonts and WebAssembly are often served wrongly by older servers.
What is application/octet-stream?
The type for "unknown binary data". Browsers download such files instead of showing them.
Is JavaScript application/javascript or text/javascript?
text/javascript — RFC 9239 (2022) made it the standard again; the other still works.
