How the Fraction Calculator works

Enter two fractions as whole-number numerators and denominators, choose an operation and select Calculate. The answer is reduced to its simplest form and also shown as a mixed number and a decimal. For a negative fraction, put the minus sign on the numerator.

Formulas

Adding and subtracting

a/b ± c/d = (ad ± bc) / bd

Where:

a: Numerator of the first fraction
b: Denominator of the first fraction
c: Numerator of the second fraction
d: Denominator of the second fraction

Multiplying and dividing

a/b × c/d = ac / bd; a/b ÷ c/d = ad / bc

Results are simplified by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.

Examples

1/2 + 1/3

3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6 (0.8333…).

3/4 ÷ 2/5

3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8, or 1 7/8 as a mixed number (1.875).

How do I enter a mixed number like 2 1/3?

Convert it to an improper fraction first: 2 × 3 + 1 = 7, so 2 1/3 is 7/3.
