How the Coffee Ratio Calculator works

Coffee strength depends on the ratio of coffee to water by weight. Choose a brew method for a typical starting ratio (or enter your own), then enter the water or the coffee you have. The calculator gives the other amount, a rough tablespoon count and the number of 240 ml cups.

Formula

coffee (g) = water (ml) ÷ ratio, water = coffee × ratio

Examples

Pour-over for two

500 ml of water at 1:16 needs 31.25 g of coffee.

French press

30 g of coffee at 1:15 takes 450 ml of water.

Frequently asked questions

What ratio should I start with?

1:15–1:17 for most filter methods. Adjust by taste: a smaller number is stronger.

Why weigh instead of using scoops?

Scoops vary with grind and bean; a scale gives the same cup every day.

What about espresso?

Espresso ratios compare coffee in to liquid out — 18 g in, about 36 g out at 1:2.
