How the Morse Code Translator works
Type text to get International Morse code, or paste Morse — dots, dashes, spaces and slashes — to get text back; the direction is detected automatically. Letters are separated by a space and words by “ / ”. Accented letters are converted to their plain form, and characters with no Morse code are listed.

dot = 1 unit · dash = 3 · gap in a letter = 1 · between letters = 3 · between words = 7
At w words per minute a unit lasts 1.2 ÷ w seconds — about 67 ms at 18 wpm.

Frequently asked questions
What does SOS stand for?
Nothing — it was chosen in 1906 because its pattern, three dots, three dashes, three dots, is easy to send and recognize.
How do I type Morse code?
Use a period for a dot and a hyphen for a dash, a space between letters and a slash between words. Typographic dots (•) and dashes (−) work too.
Why does the output show a question mark?
A sequence of dots and dashes didn't match any letter — usually a missing space between two letters.
