How the HTML Entity Encoder & Decoder works

Encode replaces the five characters that have a meaning in HTML — &, <, >, " and ' — with entities, so text shows as text instead of being read as markup. Tick the option to also write every non-ASCII character as a numeric reference.

Decode turns entities back into characters: numeric ones (&#233;, &#xE9;) and the HTML named entities such as &eacute;, &nbsp; and &mdash;.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to encode é or emoji?

Not on a page saved as UTF-8, which almost every page is. Encode them only for systems that accept ASCII alone, such as some email or XML tools.

Why encode quotes?

Inside an attribute like title="…", an unescaped quote ends the attribute early — and can let injected code in.

What happens to entities it doesn't know?

They're left exactly as written and listed below the result.
