How the Sales Tax Calculator works
Choose Add tax to a price to find the total from a price before tax, as with US sales tax. Choose Remove tax when the price already includes tax, as with VAT or GST in many countries, to find the net price and how much of the total is tax.
Enter the combined rate that applies to you — for US sales tax, that is the state rate plus any local rates.

Removing tax
net = gross ÷ (1 + r ÷ 100)
Where:

- Price including tax
Don't subtract the rate from the gross price: 20% off 120 is 96, but the price before 20% VAT is 100.
Examples
Remove 20% VAT from 120
120 ÷ 1.2 = 100 before VAT; the VAT is 20.
Frequently asked questions
Is VAT the same as sales tax?
Both are taxes on sales, but VAT is usually already included in shop prices, while US sales tax is added at the till. The maths is the same; only the direction differs.
