How the Inflation Calculator works

Choose whether you want the future cost of today's money or the value today of a future amount, then enter the amount, an annual inflation rate and the number of years. The calculator compounds the rate each year. It uses the rate you enter — not historical price data for any country.

Formula

future = today × (1 + r)t

Where:

r
Annual inflation rate as a decimal
t
Years

Buying power lost = 1 − 1 ÷ (1 + r)t.

Examples

100 at 3% inflation for 10 years

The same things cost 134.39; money loses 25.6% of its buying power.

1,000 received in 20 years at 2%

Worth 672.97 in today's money.

Frequently asked questions

What inflation rate should I use?

Many central banks aim for about 2% a year, but actual inflation has often been higher. Use your country's recent rate, or try a range.

Can inflation be negative?

Yes — that's deflation, when prices fall. Enter a negative rate: 100 at −2% for a year becomes 98.

How does this relate to interest?

Savings keep their value only if they earn at least the inflation rate. Compare with the Compound Interest Calculator.
